11th Symposium on Location-Based-Services
26-28 November 2014, Vienna, Austria
The 11th symposium on Location-Based-Service took place in Technical
University of Vienna, Austria, from 26th to 28th November 2014. The
conference was well-attended by more than 150 participants from 37
countries. The main organizer was Georg Gartner, professor at
Technical University of Vienna and the president of the International
Cartographic Association (ICA). He opened the conference and welcomed the
participants. His greetings were followed by addresses from the IAG and the
FIG.

The whole program was arranged without parallel sessions and covered
almost three complete days. The topics of the 70 talks ranged from “Social
Aspects” up to “Positioning”. In detail session covering the topics
“Wayfinding and Navigation”, “Visualization and Naigation”, “Positioning”,
Crowdsourcing and VGI”, “Spatio-Temporal Data Processing and Analysis”, “LBS
Applications”, “Service-Oriented Mapping” and “Usability, Provica, Social
Aspects and LBS Development”. These topics yield to a truly
interdisciplinary field of researchers discussing on a high level. This was
reflected by the Keynote Lectures of Prof. Liqiu Meng, Prof. Chris
Rizos and Prof. Jürgen Döllner They were covering topics from
Precise Positioning over Visualization to Abstraction of Map Applications.

All papers a published in a book and a journal special edition
respectively “Progress in Location-Based Services 2014” and “Special issue
on 11th International Symposium on Location-Based Services” of the Journal
of Location Based Services as well as in a complete digital version
available online. This is very much appreciated by all participants.
The conference was exceptionally managed by Georg Gartner and
Haosheng Huang. Finally the social events were fantastic, especially the
Conference Dinner at Esterhazykeller in the center of Vienna was delicious
and the atmosphere was very relaxed . Finally it has to mentioned that the
next LBS conference is already planned for Augsburg, Germany, 16- 18
September 2015.
