Abuja, Nigeria, 29 October 2009

Dr. Atilola Olusola, President of The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Prof. Stig Enemark, President of FIG, and A. C. P. Njepuome, Surveyor General of the Federation of Nigeria.

President Stig Enemark was invited by the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) to give the 27th Olumide Memorial Public Lecture in Abuja, 29 October 2009. The visit was hosted by Dr. Atilola Olusola, President of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS).

The Olumide Memorial Public Lecture is held every year in honour of late surveyor Cyprian T. Olumide being the first President of NIS and a pioneer of modern surveying in Nigeria. He was born about 1890 and founded the Licensed Surveyors Association in Nigeria 1934 that metamorphosed into the Land Surveyors Association of Nigeria in 1960 with Olumide as the first chairman. In 1966 the Association adopted the name the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors and Olumide became it's first President. In appreciation of his service and leadership the Institution made him Life President, and on his death 1970 the NIS Council decide to immortalize him memory by institutionalising the Olumide Memorial Lecture series, the first of which was held in 1982.

President Enemark presented a lecture on the theme: “Land Governance: Supporting the Global Agenda and Serving Society”. The lecture looked at the linkage between land governance, land reform, and climate change adaptation. It argued that measures for adaptation to climate change and disaster risk management must be integrated into strategies for poverty reduction to ensure sustainable development meeting the Millennium Development Goals.

The lecture is public and announced with full page advertisements in the national newspapers and thereby attracting attention to the important role of the surveyors in society. The lecture attracted about 500 participants and was followed by a question/answer session and press interviews etc.

The 27th Olumide Memorial Lecture was well attended by around 500 engaged participants.

The group of NIS Past Presidents gathered around NIS President Atilola Olusola and FIG President Stig Enemark.

The visit to Nigeria provided a great opportunity to meet with the very active community of Nigerian Surveyors and, at the same time, to announce and promote the election of NIS to host FIG Working Week in Abuja 2013. The facilities and the institutional support look very promising.
