Joint 12th FIG International Symposium on Deformation
Measurements and Analysis/3rd IAG Symposium on Geodesy for Geotechnical and
Structural Engineering
Baden, Austria, 22-24 May 2006
A joint meeting of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG),
Commission 6, Working Group 6.1 on Deformation Measurements and Analysis and
the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), Sub-Commission 4.2 was held
in Baden, Austria on May 22 – 24, 2006. The symposium attendance was 140
participants from 35 countries. Over 120 papers were presented in 23
technical sessions and a poster session. The symposium opened with two
keynote presentations by Chris Rizos from University of New South
Wales, Australia, and Joel Van Cranenbroeck of Leica Geosystems,
Belgium. The technical session topics included large construction sites,
GPS/pseudolites, open pit/gas/oil, landslides/crustal motion, monitoring of
structures, modeling of deformations, laser scanning, monitoring of dams,
bridges and tunnels, InSAR, optic 3D systems and several others. A small
technical exhibit was on display during breaks in the session and we would
like to thank Leica Geosystems, Geodasie Austria, Trimble, 3D-Laser Mapping
and Walter de Gruyter for their support of our symposium. There was an
evening social event hosted at a local wine tavern that was enjoyed by all
in attendance. The symposium was held in the Hotel Schloss Weikersdorf,
which was a wonderful venue. Heribert Kahmen and Guenther Retscher
and their colleagues from the Vienna University of Technology organized the
logistics of the symposium. A great amount of thanks and appreciation is due
the organizing committee for their efforts and a job well done. The
symposium proceedings have been posted on the FIG website and can be located
at http://www.fig.net/commission6/baden_2006/. The next joint symposium is
to be held in May or October 2008 and proposals are being requested soon for
those groups interested in organizing and hosting the next venue. This was
the first time the FIG and IAG held a joint symposium on the topic of
deformation measurement and it was a huge success. We plan to continue this
cooperation at future events to provide the most comprehensive venue on this
important topic. We also hope to encourage more participation from other
related groups like ISM and local organizations that would bring new and
interesting perspectives and solutions to our symposium.
