FIG Newsletter – January 2021 |
Dear Colleague,
In this first FIG Newsletter of 2021 I hope it is not too late to wish
all a Happy New Year 2021! Hoping that 2021 will be a brighter year and a
year where we can get back to a "new normal" - whatever that is... In FIG we
are at least looking very much forward to a "post-Covid-era"... Despite the
close-down FIG is still very active with Commission, Network and Task Force
activities, and espcially the e-Working Week that will take place in June
2021 is shaping up - FIG and the local Dutch organisers look forward to
inviting you to this special event.
The FIG Council
response to this current difficult situation is the decision to reduce membership
fees for 2021 with 20 per cent hoping that this will be a help to all our
members. Read more about this and other ongoing activities and announcements
here...

The fact that the Working Week has been transformed to take place virtually brings in new opportunities. This special e-Working Week will be accessible from all over the world, allowing the whole FIG Community with over 250.000 members from 120 countries to join in the event. From the organizing side we will do our utmost to bring together an unforgettable conference with possibilities to make meaningful connections with our sponsors, attendees and speakers, as well as attend sessions designed to be interesting, innovative and engaging.
Besides the subthemes Smart Surveyors, Integrated Land and Water Management and Ten Years to Achieve the SDG’s, we want to focus on the surveyors and the challenges they have in an unstable, uncertain and unpredictable world and with what technology, methods and procedures they face these new developments. How do surveyors adapt to these unexpected circumstances and what have we learned so far from these challenges?
Currently, the Local Organising Committee from the Netherlands and FIG Council, Commissions, Networks and Task Forces are working on the technical programme for this e-Working Week, shaping the sessions to fit to an online session format.
A virtual event gives a different opportunity to get close to the participants and to reach out to specific target groups Currently we are working on attractive sponsorship packages, and if you have an idea for your specific sponsorship please contact Claudia at csp@fig.net.
FIG and the local organisers from the Netherlands are working on a unique event based on -
In other words: After attending FIG e-Working Week 2021 you will be: inspired, (re)connected, energized, gained knowledge, feel part of a community...
FIG General Assembly 2021
The FIG General Assembly will take place in connection with the e-Working Week - also in a virtual format. The agenda will as usual be sent out by email and published on the web site before the General Assembly. The General Assembly, due to the fact that it will be online, will however be in a different format and the intention of FIG Council will be to encourage delegates to participate in debates rather than listening to reportings. Written reports will be published with the agenda as every year, and may also be followed by a video presentation. Right now we are working on a voting system that allows members to vote independent from time zones and connectivity to the internet. More information on the General Assembly and the votings will be sent to members in due time.
Each month on FIG web site you can find a special selected paper called "FIG Article of the Month".
The Article of the Month January is written by Ryan Keenan et al. A Global Survey of Reference Frame Competency in terms of Education, Training and Capacity Building (ETCB): Results, Analysis and Update This paper presents the results of a survey, and offers a brief analysis of the findings, outlines a summary of the issues and identifies a number of follow-on tasks for the UN-GGIM Subcommittee on Geodesy Read the article.
