Professional Career Dr. Tom Kennie holds bachelor's and master's degrees in topographic science from the University of Glasgow and a doctorate in remote sensing from Imperial College, University of London. He subsequently obtained an MBA from the University of Sussex. His career has spanned university lecturing, in the UK and the Caribbean; manager of training and management development for one of the major UK construction companies; and director of human resources at DTZ Debenham Thorpe, one of Europe's largest multi-disciplinary surveying practices. He is now a director of the Ranmore Consulting Group, offering senior management training and organisational reviews to professional service and educational organisations; and a part-time professor of business management in the professions at Sheffield Hallam University. He is a past chairman of the education and membership committee of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and a member of its international policy group. Other Biographical Details Tom Kennie graduated in topographic science from the University of Glasgow in 1974. His appointment to CAST, Jamaica, where he was responsible for the development of two full-time courses in land surveying, was sponsored by the UK government. He returned to Glasgow University with a Carnegie scholarship and obtained his Master's degree in applied science (topograhic science) in 1980. At the University of Surrey, in addition to his lecturing duties, he was warden of two courts of residence with responsibility for over 600 students. He organised over 20 post-experience short courses and several major research projects s covering digital terrain modelling and geographic information systems, deformation monitoring of structures and use of airborne and satellite remote sensing in civil engineering. In 1991 he was awarded his PhD in remote sensing by Imperial College London After a year as manager of training and management development for Balfour Beatty's construction companies, he was appointed Director of Human Resources, DTZ Debenham Thorpe, one of Europe's largest multi-disciplinary surveying practices. He was a member of the group's senior management team and responsible to its chief executive for 1200 staff based in over 20 offices throughout Europe, the Middle and the Far East. During this time he also obtained his Master of Business Administration from the University of Sussex. As a founding director of the Ranmore Consulting Group he advises professional service organisations (such as surveyorsa, lawyers and management consultants). Projects range from senior management training to conducting independent organisational reviews to provide options for senior managers. He is also a part-time Professor at Sheffield Hallam University's school of environment and development. Tom Kennie was elected a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in 1984. He has served as a member of the Land Surveyors Divisional Council, the General Council and the Education and Membership Committee (which he chaired in 1995-96). He has published two strategic reviews of the Institution's future policy towards continuing professional development and education.
