Election of two Vice Presidents - get to know your candidates

The General Assembly 2024 will take place in Accra, Ghana on 19 and 23 May. As part of the General Assembly there will be election of two new FIG Vice Presidents.

FIG Council has received five nominations for candidates for these two positions. During the first General Assembly day each candidate will be given 5 minutes for a presentation from the stage. After this first general assembly the voting will start, and there can be up to four rounds of voting.

We would like you to get better acquainted with the candidates and have therefore given them the opportunity to present themselves. They have been asked to deliver a 200-word description and either a video or a flyer/text in which they can elaborate on their nomination. Further, we have inlcluded their nomination form and letter for your attention. Even though you are not eligible to vote we do hope that you wil take some time to get to know the candidates.

Unfortunately, not all member associations will be represented in Accra, Ghana. We do recommend to meet the candidates in person which gives a more complete impression. However all member associations who are eligible to vote and who have submitted information about their official representative for voting are encouraged to study this material carefully before you cast your vote. 

You can meet the candidates in the morning coffee break on Monday 20 May at the FIG stand in the exhibition.

Each candidate is listed in the alphabetic order of their family name.

A. Stephen Djaba, Ghana

B. Michail Kalogiannakis, Greece

Michail Kalogiannakis, Technical Chamber of Greece, Greece

Michalis Kalogiannakis is the Secretary General of CLGE and was a Vice President for two terms. Michalis was first elected as President of the HARSE (Hellenic Association of Rural & Syrveying Engineers) in 2016 at the age of 32, and is now the outgoing President.

He has been involved in FIG, since 2011, as a member of the FIG’s network of young surveyors!
He has significant experience in private-public sector relations (Ministries, Municipalities, etc.) and is CEO of GREEN Estate (Topo GES) where he is actively involved in the field using technological advanced solutions related to topography, geospatial data management, photogrammetry, cadastre, valuation and property management.

He is 40 years old. He has a daughter and a son. His wife is a civil engineer.
He studied at the National Technical University of Athens as a Rural and Surveying Engineer and has a Master's degree in Construction Management.

In his home town, he has served as deputy mayor at the age of 26.

He is actively involved in social issues, basically related to engineering, and he often write and speak in major media for such issues that concern citizens.

 

C. Tomasz Malinowski, Poland

Tomasz Malinowski, Association of Polish Surveyors (SGP)

Tomasz Malinowski has been an active member of the Association of Polish Surveyors (SGP) for many years and has served as vice president of the Association since 2022. With his commitment and energy, he can reliably and effectively carry out the tasks set before him.

Tomasz Malinowski certainly made a good impression during the FIG 2022 Congress organized in Poland. In the opinion of the organizers and participants he is a very communicative person, an excellent organizer, a man of action, and always ready for various challenges. In the geodetic environment, he works international, he is known as a high-class specialist open to new solutions and technologies and with an interdisciplinary and comprehensive approach to solving engineering tasks. His culture, optimism, energy, ability to work in a team and effectiveness are the features that make him an excellent manager.

Tomasz Malinowski has extensive experience and undoubtedly skills in promotional activities and establishing cooperation with business partners. He is very involved in promoting the Association and federation and has recently supported FIG's efforts to obtain sponsors and exhibitors. His personal qualities and actions make us see him as a leader, capable of building a team around him that can carry out demanding tasks, and a perfect candidate for the vice president of FIG.

 

D. Volker Schwieger

German Association for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land Management DVW, Germany

My name is Volker Schwieger. I am working as a Professor at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, within an international and gender-balanced team at the Institute of Engineering Geodesy. I have experience in leading positions, e.g. as Dean of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering and Geodesy at the University of Stuttgart.

I also have broad experience within the FIG: Commission 5 Chair, chief editor of the peer review process, chair and member of working groups within Commissions 5 and 8, organization of workshops and seminars, author of FIG publications. Two years ago, I was appointed honorary member of the FIG.

My goals for the next 4 years are:

  •  to further enlarge the positive view on the surveying profession world-wide,
  • installing an early-warning system for current challenges in society for the benefit of our profession
  • evolving the measurement competency of the profession
  • making the surveying and geodesy profession lively in the future and more attractive for the next generation.

Personally, I am team-oriented, ready to take compromises but have leadership abilities. I am an experienced and open-minded person giving my best to support FIG and its members with all my heart and mind. Please vote for me.

 

E. Qin Yan, China

Qin Yan, Chinese Society for Geodesy, Photogrammetry and Cartography CSGPC, China

Prof. Dr. Qin YAN is the President of Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping, the Vice President of Chinese Society for Geodesy Photogrammetry and Cartography(CSGPC). She has been working as an administrative director, a scientist and a proud surveyor in the geospatial area for over 30 years.

As an Administrative director in government, she was in charge of policy making, administrative management, S&T development, even poverty alleviation work, etc. She organized a number of large projects, such as Western China Mapping, Mount Qomolangma Height Surveying, with a total budget over $200 million.

As an geomatics scientist, she has been granted state and world awards for her academic achievements, cooperated with more than 20 countries, like Germany, the UK, Australia, Finland, and international organizations, like UN-GGIM, IUGG, ISPRS, ICA and FIG,  supervised PhD and Master candidates and helped young surveyors with their career plans.

As a proud surveyor, she had earned the award of Outstanding Woman Surveyor for geomatics innovation, and being honored as National Excellent Science and Technology Workers in China. She dedicated all her love and passion to her career.

Today, she would like devote her passion to FIG and contribute more to FIG, for our shared future.
