21st Meeting of the International Steering Committee on Global Mapping5 August 2014, United Nations Headquarters in New YorkISCGM had its birth at the first Rio Conference and is supported by a
commitment of the Japanese Government to this day. Then, the Ministry of
Construction of Japan (presently the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure,
Transport and Tourism) proposed the “Global Mapping Project” as a
contribution to global environmental conservation from the mapping sector,
in response to “Agenda21” adopted at the “Earth Summit” In 1992. The
Secretariat resides within the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan.
ISCGM currently also cooperate with UN-GGIM and its Working Group on Global
Mapping for Sustainable Development (WG GM4SD). ISCGM is participated by UN
member states and is currently chaired by Prof. Paul Cheung. FIG has liaison
status.
At ISCGM, Global Map is a group of global geographic data sets of known and verified quality, with consistent specifications that will be open to the public. Global Map is considered a common asset of mankind, and will be distributed worldwide at marginal cost. The day long meeting included presentations and participations from member states, international organizations and industry reaffirmed the high usability of geospatial information to inform global sustainable development and the significance of various global mapping initiatives. ISCGM will continue to advocate the significance of these initiatives and leadership it should take in the field of global mapping. Further meetings at UN Headquarter in New York, August 2014:
