FIG Commission Publication Author Support Grant

OUTLINE

The FIG Foundation offers author support grants of up to 28,000 euros spread over a maximum of four years. The grants are aimed at (1) increasing FIG publications by authors who reside in low-income, lower-middle or upper-middle income economy countries, and (2) contributing to the implementation of part of a Commission’s Working Plan.

An application should state explicitly how the project contributes to the outcomes envisaged in the relevant part of the Commission’s Working Plan and.

The proposed author, hereafter referred to as “the author” is expected to have a significant input into the application and the extent of their involvement should be clear in the application. “Project” refers to the publication as the final output and the work expected to generate the publication. For the purposes of this grant, a Commission’s Working Plan may be a project involving more than one commission, in which case “Commission” is deemed to be all the commissions involved in the relevant plan or part thereof.
Applications shall be submitted by Commission Chairs. In the event of a joint venture involving more than one commission, the various Commission Chairs shall submit a joint application.

The following conditions apply:

1. 1. The funding will be renewed on an annual basis over the project cycle (i.e. a maximum of four years) subject to a satisfactory review by the FIG Foundation of a progress report which describes the outcomes measured against the proposed outcomes, a work plan for the year ahead and the remaining years in the project, and an explanation of how funds were spent against what was budgeted for the year.
2. Note that a four year cycle is a liberal interpretation of the work expected to complete the project.
3. The annual progress report shall be co-signed by the author and the Commission Chair(s).
4. The funded author shall take the lead and do the bulk of the work on the publication. They may be assisted by other commission representatives as co-authors. Leadership by the author has to be clear to the FIG Foundation
5. The author shall be an active participant in policy development and/or some form of knowledge development related to surveying, and they should be qualified as a professional surveyor[1].
6. The author shall be a citizen of and resident in a country listed by the World Bank as a low-income, lower-middle or upper-middle income economy[2].
7. The author shall have an established record of published research and/or knowledge dissemination – for example articles in good quality internationally recognised peer reviewed journals or chapters in published books serves as a useful guideline. Preference will be given to authors who have a long career ahead of them.
8.  Grants are to be used for attendance at FIG Commission annual meetings, presentation of peer reviewed papers at FIG Conferences and Working Weeks, and peer reviewed papers at other conferences related to the project, and other matters specified in the proposal and in annual work plans and progress reports.
9. As the publication is part of a Commission’s Working Plan, the FIG Foundation shall be acknowledged in the publication itself and in the annual progress report of the Commission to the General Assembly.

Applications will be judged on the quality of the application and need. In the event that two excellent applications are judged to be of equal quality, applications where the author is from, resident in, and working in a low-income or lower-middle income country will be preferred.

Applicants are to submit their application in 12 point Times New Roman font as a single PDF document, A4 size, minimum margin sizes 25mm / 1 inch, in the following order. Applicants are strongly advised to view the videos on submitting grant applications to the FIG Foundation.

In layman’s “press release” type language, communicate the objectives of the proposed publication project, the scientific or pragmatic approach, the novelty and significance of the work. Maximum number of words = 400.

List and argue the envisaged benefits in the following order:

1. Benefits to FIG and other possible target audience(s).
2. Benefits to the Commission(s).
3. Benefits to the author’s home country.
4. Benefits to the author

PROPOSED CHAPTER OUTLINE AND PAGE BUDGET FOR EACH CHAPTER

Provide a brief outline of the proposed chapters – maximum 200 words per chapter and a page budget for each chapter.

METHODOLOGY AND WORKPLAN

Maximum two pages.

BUDGET

Describe and argue the budget over the four year cycle. If the application is successful, this should be revised every year and included in the annual report. Ensure that other possible sources of funding are listed.
Note that the FIG foundation does not fund per diem allowances or administration costs.
