FIG Working Week 2013 in Nigeria – Environment for Sustainability

Abuja, Nigeria, International Conference Centre and Nicon Luxury Hotel 6–10 May 2013

REPORTS:
FIG Working Week 2013:
FIG General assembly:

More than 2000 Nigerian and regional participants and almost 250 International participants from around 40 countries attended the successful Working Week which was also the largest Working Week ever in FIG history.

The programme of the Working Week was filled with technical sessions and special sessions with good attendance. There was a lively and busy atmosphere throughout the week and all the Nigerian participants gave the Working Week a colourful and energetic touch both to the technical programme and the social activities.

The local organiser, NIS, deserves a very big THANKS for the huge effort both in the preparations and during the Working Week.

Welcome by surv. (Hon) Bode Adeaga, fnis, President Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, NISD

I feel privileged to welcome you on behalf of FIG and the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) to the 2013 FIG Working Week in Abuja, Nigeria.

It is particularly exciting as we move into the final phase of our preparations which started immediately after the Eilat Working Week in Israel in May, 2009. For about four years now, the 2,500 members of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors who are in government, academia and the private sector, have all come together to ensure adequate support to the 2013 FIG Working Week. Nigeria has two other sister-members of FIG, i.e. The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) and the Nigeria Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) They have been working together with NIS. The level of preparedness is such that I can assure all; especially those that are visiting Nigeria for the first time; that it will be a hitch free and memorable occasion.

The city of Abuja, is the new capital of Nigeria. It took over from the coastal city of Lagos in 1989. Abuja will be experiencing cooler wheather in May as it is the beginning of the raining season. The International Conference Centre (ICC) Abuja is the Conference venue. It is situated within the Central Business District. The Conference Hotel is the Nicon Luxury Hotel, located very close to the (ICC) for added convenience.

The theme, “Environment for Sustainability” is apt. Once again FIG has created a conducive atmosphere for the sharing of ideas that will certainly move the Surveying Profession to the next level. When we meet and share experiences on issues, it allows others to arrive at solutions to their local problems.

I wish to invite all members to the 2013 FIG Working Week in Abuja, Nigeria. It promises to be technically rewarding and socially enjoyable. Keep visiting the site and be up to date with news on Abuja 2013.

Welcome by CheeHai Teo, President International Federation of Surveyors, FIG

It gives me great pleasure to invite you to our 2013 Working Week in Abuja, Nigeria that is jointly organized by FIG and the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS).

NIS is being supported by the Government of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation - Nigeria (OSGOF), the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON), the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) and the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV). This Working Week, with the theme “Environment for Sustainability” is very appropriate at this juncture.

The Profession recognizes that we are operating within a complex but interconnected environment, where we need to engage societal, environmental, economic and political realities as the Profession seeks to extend the use and usefulness of surveying towards the betterment of humanity. However, there is optimism as our professional community has the sciences, knowledge, technologies and practices to rely upon. And when this situation is operating in synergistic manner, there can be an environment for sustainability, particularly for the Profession.

FIG will continue to provide the global forum for professionals, practitioners and partners as we seek to serve the places, the policies and the people together. FIG’s 2013 Working Week will once again bring together participants of different cultures, from diverse surveying traditions and varying professional experiences. The organizers have received more than 230 paper proposals, continuing the very successful formula with options for presenting peer reviewed, academic, technical and practical papers, and thus should be of interest to participants from all over the world. As in previous Working Weeks, there will also be social events and the experiences in Abuja will be unique and memorable as well.

I look forward to meeting you in Abuja in May 2013.
